Dr. Amber K. Brooks
A LEADING Anesthesiologist and Comprehensive Pain Medicine Physician
Amber K. Brooks, MD, is a Board Certified Anesthesiologist and Comprehensive Pain Medicine Physician with 9 years of experience practicing general anesthesia and managing a variety of acute and chronic pain conditions. She has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving patient care as highlighted by her academic endeavors in the areas of clinical leadership, clinical research, and education which earned her promotion to Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Wake Forest School of Medicine (WFSM) in 2017.
At the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) where she practiced Anesthesia and Pain Medicine from 2010-2013, Dr. Brooks played an integral role in developing her department’s quality improvement and patient safety program. She served in several leadership positions including Director of the Clinical Quality Improvement Conference, Co-Chair of the Anesthesia Quality Improvement Committee, and Co-Chair of the Handoff Communications Task Force. In addition, she helped developed a perioperative handoff tool and curricula for anesthesia residents at UAB and authored a publication in Anesthesiology which addressed the ACGME’s mandate for hand-off education. Drawing upon prior leadership experiences at UAB, Dr. Brooks was appointed as the Medical Director of the Wake Forest Lexington Pain Center, from 2014-2017. In this role, she introduced several patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.
As one of <2,000 Board Certified Pain Medicine Physicians in the United States, Dr. Brooks bears the weight of the opioid epidemic and the personal obligation to expand and improve care offered to her patients. She has recently focused her transition from a fully clinical practice towards a clinical research career. She is the principal investigator of two NIH- funded grants that will leverage technology and the electronic health record to deliver nonpharmacological treatments to a vulnerable population: older adults with chronic pain.
Dr. Brooks recognizes the importance of teaching and mentoring the next generation of physicians. To that end, she is involved with several mentoring efforts including a new WFSM pilot mentoring program for underrepresented minority resident physicians. She also served as the Co-Faculty leader of a new longitudinal health equity curriculum for 3rd and 4th year medical school students. In this role, she developed the curriculum for and teaches Implicit Bias in Pain Management during the 3rd year Anesthesia clerkship.
Dr. Brooks’ leadership experience and team management expertise serve her well in her role as a member of the American Academy of Pain Management Education and CME Oversight Committee.
Dr. Brooks attended the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine from 2001-2005. She finished her intern year at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in 2006. She completed her Anesthesia residency training at UAB in 2009 and Pain Management Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 2010.
