Reiki is a form of healing therapy in which practitioners use their palms to transfer energy to the patient in attempt to alleviate pain, reduce stress, and promote relaxation.

Reiki is an ancient Japanese technique first practiced by Japanese Buddhist Miako Usi, who ended up teaching Reiki to patients during his lifetime. Reiki became popular in the United States in the 1940s, and in Europe in the 1980s, as a form of pain treatment, and is also known as “biofield” therapy.

People with chronic pain often find Reki to be very effective. A recent issue of International Journal of Behavioral Medicine reviewed 66 clinical trials on biofield therapy and concluded that it helped reduce pain for patients suffering from cancer.

In another study published in Alternate Therapies in Health and Medicine, patients with consistent Reiki treatments had a reduction in negative feelings associated with depression and psychological stress. Not only that, but their symptoms continued to subside for a year after treatment ended.

Reiki has also been known to help patients who are undergoing surgery. Not only can it help with anxieties leading up to a surgery, but post operation, patients who had Reiki sessions report a reduction in stress levels, depression and pain.

Practitioners say that Reiki therapy works by opening up a channel to transfer the energy to the patient. For patients, the treatment feels like a glowing radiance that is around the body. Reiki intends to treat the mental, physical, and emotional being, and promotes a feeling of calmness and peace afterwards.

Many hospitals now offer Reiki, but it is important to find a creditable practitioner. Since there is no governing body for a certification to be a Reiki teacher, it is important to examine your practitioner’s background, such as what level of training, years in practice, and how much clinical experience she or he has.
